(Hope, I am a Person) , 2019

I sought to create a monument for myself—for one who still survives and strives to stand in solidarity. It is a monument for the vulnerable: though we may be too fragile to withstand irresistible violence, though we may be but anonymous voices that seem meaningless, and though our support and solidarity may be brittle and fleeting.
The Korean word Baram carries a dual meaning: it signifies both the ‘wind’ that suggests a drift or transgression, and a ‘wish’ or ‘hope.’ Produced during my residency at Suchang Youth Mansion using threads and door screens (munbal) sourced from Seomun Market, <Hope, I am a Person> encapsulates a ‘longing’ (baram)—the yearning to be a person, and the wish to be treated as one.

(Hope, I am a Person) , 2019
