눈 뭉치에 눈을 달아 주면 ‘눈 사람’이 된다. 그 순간부터는 단순한 눈 덩어리가 아닌 의미있는 존재가 되어 버리는 것처럼, 돌멩이도 그랬으면 좋겠다. ‘돌 사람’의 반짝이는 눈에 대해 생각하다가, 불현듯 순정만 화 속 주인공의 과장된, 그러나 아름다운 눈을 떠올렸다.

순정만화는 누가 뭐래도 여성주인공의 열렬한 사랑 혹은 관계에 대한 열망이 담긴 이야기다. 사랑을 위한 여주인공의 용기. 당시 나는 그 반짝이는 눈의 등장인물들을 조건없이 응원하곤 했다. 아마도 그 시절 내가 진짜 사랑했던 것은 주인공이 ‘해피앤딩이라는 세계에 도착하기 위해 애쓰는 마음’이었다. 그리고 순정 만화 속 다채롭게 반짝이던 마음이 아직 나에게 남아 존재한다는 것을 느낀다.

돌,봄은 성별 고정관념이라는 납작한 시선으로 만들어 내는 명랑한 감각을 보여주면서, 동시에 어떤 열망이 반짝이는 순간을 포착한다. 수동적 삶을 살게 만든 사회에 대한 불만, 애환, 자기자신으로 불릴수 없던 억울함, 그럼에도 삶을 긍정하고 따뜻하게 데워지고자 하는 열망. 돌멩이들은 고요해 보이지만 외치고 있다. 소설 <플랫랜드> 속에서 선일 뿐인, 그러나 실은 더 나은 곳으로 나아가고자 했던, ‘뾰족했던’ 여자들 처럼.

When you put eyes on a snowball, it becomes a “snow Human”. From that moment on, it becomes something more than just a lump of snow, I want the stone to be the same. While thinking about the sparkling eyes of the ‘stone Human’, I suddenly remembered the exaggerated but beautiful eyes of the protagonist in romance comics.

‘Romance comics’ is a story about a female protagonist’s passionate love or desire for a relationship. The heroine’s courage for love. At the time, I used to root for those sparkling-eyed characters unconditionally. Perhaps what I really loved at that time was “the protagonist’s heart that struggle to reach the world of happy ending ever after”, and I feel that the colorful sparkling heart of the original comics still exists in me.

<Stone, Sight> shows a sense of cheerfulness created by the flat gaze of gender stereotypes, while at the same time capturing a moment of sparkling aspiration. Dissatisfaction with the society that forced them to live a passive life, anguish, the injustice of not being able to call themselves what they want to be, nevertheless the desire to affirm life and let them warm up. The stones look silent, but they are shouting out. Like the “pointed” women in the novel <Flat land> who were only good, but actually wanted to go to a better place.
