(Natural Painting), 2023
I love flowers more than ever. It seems to me that it’s only “natural” that my love of nature should seep in. What is natural? I wonder if a flower can grow out of a stone. If a hard lump can be nourished by a airy flower.
<Natural Painting> is a painting of a flower blooming from a stone, pressed flat with the way the digital world works (photogrammetry and digital simulation).
Here’s how it was created: The real flowers and stones are photographed in 360 degrees (hundreds of shots) and then transformed into 3D models using photogrammetry techniques. And then, the 3D model’s materials and physical effects are applied in HOUDINI, a special effects program. The flattening process is simulated by controlling various variables until the desired result is achieved. The flattened virtual flower models are combined with stones to form a still-life composition, just like a real photo shoot and then, lighting and backgrounds are set up, the 3D models are colored, and the 3D data is rendered into 2D images. Finally, the converted image is printed and reproduced as a real painting.
Beyond the flatness of the digital medium, the 2D image is physically reproduced in the real world (regardless of its actual size). At first glance, the images appear to capture nature, but the question of ‘natural’ immediately arises. This is because they do not retain the appearance of the real object, but are new objects with displaced forms and properties. Through this flattening, we are reminded that flowers are often flattened, and we may be able to sense the unfamiliar depth of the real thing behind the monitor.
