‘꽃그림’을 그리던 와중에, 충동적으로 조화를 샀다. 라벨에는 ‘언제나 생생한 식물이라고 쓰여 있었다. 조화는 생화를 대체하려고 만들어졌지만, ‘자연스럽지’ 않다. 조화는 시들지 않는다. 꽃은 해를 보고 물을 마시며 피는데, 조화는 해를 보고 비를 맞으면 색을 잃는다. 살면서 색을 잃은 조화를 봤던 게 언제 어디에서였는지를 생각하면 괜히 마음이 먹먹해진다.
쓰임을 다해 빛깔이 다 빠진 조화는 보통 서둘러 교체된다. 시든 꽃이 받는 대우와 다르지 않다. 탈색된 조화도 사랑받을 수 있을까? 여전히 꽃일까?
돌멩이를 닮은 점토는 흔히 생화에 쓰이는 플로럴폼(오아시스)대신에 조화를 지탱한다. 일시적이고 제한 적인 생명력 대신에 체온으로 변형한 점토 돌멩이를 조화에 접붙였다. 생생한 그림 은 조화에게 체온을 전달하려는 마음을 담은 회화다. ‘생생한 체온’를 마련해 주고 싶은 마음. 온기는 결국 식지만, 손자국은 남는다. 지나 온 내 애씀들이 그러했듯이.

While working on a ‘flower painting’, I impulsively bought an artificial flower. The label on it written as “Always a living plant”. Artificial flowers were created to replace real flowers, but they are not ‘natural’. Artificial flowers don’t wilt. Flowers see the sun, drink water, and bloom. However, artificial flowers see the sun, get rained on, and lose color. When I think of the times and places in my life where I have seen artificial flowers that have lost their color, it makes me feel heart-rending.

Artificial flowers that have been used up and lost their colors are usually replaced in a hurry. It’s not unlike the way wilted flowers are being treated. Can faded artificial flowers be loved? Are they still flowers?

Clay, which resembles a stone, supports the artificial flowers instead of the floral foam (oasis) that is usually used for live flowers. Instead of a temporary and limited life force, a stone of clay that has been transformed by body heat is grafted onto the artificial flowers. The <Lively painting> is an painting attempt to convey body heat to artificial flowers. I wanted to provide them with a “lively body heat. The warmth eventually cools, but the handprints remain. As have all my endeavors in the past.
