I(you)have(always)never been(leave)myself(me alone),2018
This work examines the intersectionality between the lives of immigrants—who have lived feeling as though they have never truly been themselves—and a society that has consistently left them isolated. Wongok-dong in Ansan, designated as a multi-cultural special district known as the ‘Borderless Village,’ is home to a population where the vast majority are foreign nationals. The migrant women and laborers in this region are incessantly exposed to various forms of sexual violence and discrimination, often instrumentalized as mere cogs in the capitalist machine or subjected to perpetual sexual objectification.
I have collected the insulting texts that are consumed and discarded like scraps of paper in their daily lives, visualizing them through embroidery—a medium often dismissed as mere ‘women’s domestic labor.’ For these women, whose identities have been erased, I propose that their inherent energy must be redirected toward a path that is more humane and honors their personal dignity.
